Tracking your button clicks via Google Tag Manager

Estimated time to complete: 20 minutes
Requirements: An account on NowButtons.com

When you have Google Analytics (GA) implemented on your website via Google Tag Manager (GTM), setting up click tracking will be a little more work. This article gives some insight into the process for setting up click tracking via GTM. For more detailed (and likely better) instructions, please use the official GTM documentation.

Setting up event or click tracking in GTM is a 5 step process:

  1. Enable the required click variable
  2. Create a custom variable for the action
  3. Create the button click trigger
  4. Create the button click event tag
  5. Publish your changes

Let's get started!

Step 1

Enable the required click variable

Step 2

Creating a custom variable for the action

Step 3

Creating the button click trigger

Step 4

Creating the button click event tag

Step 5

The last step is to publish your variables, trigger and tag. It might be smart to use the GTM preview mode and test if the tracking was set up correct. When in preview mode, open Events from the Real-time view in Google Analytics. That way you can click the buttons in preview mode and GA directly tells you if it's working.

If everything looks and works as intended, click Submit to publish your tracking.
